Kompiang Metri-Davies was introduced to Balinese dance at the age of five in her village of Ngis in Eastern Bali, Indonesia. She was a lead dancer of and performed music with the premier American Balinese dance ensemble Gamelan Sekar Jaya for many years. She has also been involved in numerous cross–cultural collaborations, including: East As Center with Pandit Chitresh Das (2003), and Ramayana with the Abinaya Dance Company (1997) which both of which blended Balinese and South Asian Indian dance. She has appeared in Shadow Light production’s Sidha Karya (1996) and In Xanadu (1997) both of which incorporated dance and shadow puppetry. In 1998, she worked with Yasmen Sorab Metha on a piece entitled The Piper, and 1996 she choreographed an original dance piece with composer Dudley Brooks called Lithe Spirit.
Kompiang was a featured dancer in the presentation of the vintage film Dance of the Virgins at The World trade Center in 1999. She was also finalist for the Isadora Duncan Dance Award in 1999 for both individual and ensemble performance.
Kompiang has been invited to dance with the University of British Columbia’s Balinese Gamelan ensemble, Gong Gita Asmara in Vancouver in 2001, 2003, and 2004. She performs for the San Francisco Consul General Of Indonesia for various events.
In 2006 Kompiang created and performed a one-hour long autobiographical multimedia dance-theater piece, Liku Liku Hidupku which was directed by Joyce Lu.
She has performed in the San Francisco Etnic Dance Festival numerous times.
In addition to dancing Kompiang designs and creates costumes of the dance. She offers private lessons in traditional Balinese dance for adults and children.
